School Health Advisory Council

The Board of Trustees of the Van Alstyne Independent School District authorizes the establishment of the Van Alstyne Independent School District School Health Advisory Council. The purpose of the School Health Advisory Council is to ensure that local community values are reflected in the District's health education instruction as well as offering recommendations to the Board of Trustees in the areas of health education curriculum.

For a breakdown of the SHAC bylaws, as well as a list of the SHAC duties specified in the Texas Education Code 28.004, see the documents provided below:

A two-person Nutrition SHAC subcommittee can follow this four-step workflow:

  1. Focus and Plan: The two members choose one main goal for the year and divide the work into research and communication tasks.
  2. Gather Information: They collect feedback from parents and the community using short online surveys distributed via school email lists, newsletters, and scannable QR codes at school events, while also collaborating directly with the school's Food Service Director.
  3. Develop and Share Recommendations: The subcommittee analyzes the gathered feedback and creates specific recommendations, presenting a one-page summary to the full SHAC.
Follow Up and Report: After presenting to the SHAC, they update the community on the committee's findings and any actions taken using school newsletters and flyers, which closes the feedback loop and shows that community input was valued.
