Homeless Services (McKinney Vento)

Overview
Van Alstyne ISD provides services and resources that support homeless students and their families. The McKinney-Vento Act ensures that students experiencing homelessness have equitable access to education and the support necessary for success. The staff offers technical assistance to all district campuses and works with families to overcome barriers to enrollment and participation in school programs.


Services Available

  • Immediate enrollment for children and youth meeting the criteria for homelessness as defined by the McKinney-Vento Act.

  • Assistance with obtaining required school vaccinations.

  • Support in accessing medical, dental, and mental health services.

  • Immediate enrollment in the National School Lunch Program to receive free breakfast and lunch.

  • Collaboration with community organizations to provide additional resources such as food, shelter, and support services outside of school.


Eligibility
Students and families may qualify for McKinney-Vento services if they are experiencing unstable housing situations such as living in shelters, motels, cars, parks, or temporarily sharing housing with others due to loss of housing or financial hardship.
