Brown Named Lone Finalist

Following an extensive search for the next leader of Van Alstyne ISD, Dr. David Brown was named Lone Finalist at Monday’s board meeting.

After the announcement Brown stated, “I am honored by the Boards’ confidence in my ability to lead this great district I am excited to be able to work in partnership with the students, staff, and the community to build upon the great things which are happening at Van Alstyne ISD.”

The hiring process isn’t final until trustees vote following the 21 days wait required by state law.  Following that time frame, trustees will finalize the vote.

The finalist announcement comes following the Board of Trustees search via all major channels of educator sites, receiving 65 applications and interviewing a highly qualified nine candidates. The search was conducted after VAISD Superintendent Dr. John Spies’ announcement in December of his intent to retire.  Dr. Spies plans to retire in June 2017, capping a 40 year career in education.   Dr. Brown, if voted by trustees, would take over at that time.

Randall Morgan, Board President, added “The board is pleased to have Dr. Brown as our lone finalist.  Dr. Brown has repeatedly demonstrated his leadership abilities in his roles as High School Principal and Assistant Superintendent during his six years at Van Alstyne ISD.  With his extensive knowledge of our district's successes and challenges we are confident he will be a strong leader in our collaborative effort to make ongoing improvements in our growing district. Dr. Brown and the board will continue our efforts to do everything possible to provide a Premier education for all VAISD students so that our students have the opportunity to achieve their full potential in life.”

As VAHS principal, Dr. Brown inherited a campus rated unacceptable and turned it around to quickly become one of the highest rated high schools in the State of Texas.  Schooldigger.com gives VAHS their highest rating of five stars.

As Assistant Superintendent he leads the District Improvement Committee, listening and working with elected staff, administrators and community members to deliver their voice and vision to the trustees.  He was instrumental in bringing TEA’s District of Innovation status to Van Alstyne ISD, allowing for more local control.  He has been active in daily operations in human resources, finance, policy development and curriculum.

Dr. Brown joined VAISD after beginning his administrative career in Mabank ISD where he had been Asst. High School principal and Asst. Junior High principal.  Brown taught science and coached basketball for ten years prior to that.

“Van Alstyne is very fortunate to have such an outstanding lone finalist.  Dr. Brown has a great passion for students and the Van Alstyne ISD community.  I believe he will take a great District and lead it to be even better,” said Dr. Spies.

Dr. Brown and wife Mandi have two sons, Carson and Caden.  Mrs. Brown is a Van Alstyne Middle School Science Teacher.  Brown stated, “Mandi and I are fortunate to be able to work and raise our family in such a wonderful community. We are proud to call Van Alstyne home and to be Van Alstyne Panthers.”
