VAHS Teacher Renee Jacquez Honored with Golden Apple Award

Van Alstyne High School teacher Renee Jacquez received a special surprise Tuesday when she was named a Golden Apple award winner, presented by Texoma Chevy Dealers and KTEN.

Jacquez is one of 16 Golden Apple recipients who will be recognized across the Texoma area during the 2026-27 school year. Each recipient receives $750 to use toward classroom needs and is featured in a special KTEN television segment highlighting their impact on students and their community.

“It's pretty amazing. I had no idea,” Jacquez said. “This is a great community to live and work in.”

A 20-year veteran educator, Jacquez teaches biology at Van Alstyne High School and serves as Student Council co-sponsor. Her impact at VAHS extends well beyond the classroom.

Jacquez is a familiar face at school events and activities, consistently showing up to support students and fellow Panthers. In the classroom, she works to find engaging ways for students to connect with the material they are learning.

She has also played an instrumental role in growing the Student Council at VAHS, including helping establish a dedicated Student council elective period. Mrs. Jacquez co-sponsors Student Council with Catherine Wells and was quick to credit Mrs. Wells for the work they do together behind the scenes.

“I couldn't do it without Mrs. Wells,” Jacquez said. “We help each other get things done. She is huge in my success. It takes a village.”

Jacquez said she already has plans for the $750 award, including purchasing materials for classroom labs and other activities.

Golden Apple recipients are nominated by students or families of students, adding another layer of significance to the recognition.

“I am over the moon grateful and just appreciative of this community and the people in it,” Jacquez said.

As a Golden Apple recipient, Jacquez will also be in the running for the Golden Apple of the Year award, which comes with an additional $1,000 prize.
