Cerveteri: Etruscan cemetery

This is the Banditaccia necropolis at Cerveteri (Ancient Caere) showing the "Street of Tombs" running among the various funeral mounds or "tumuli".  Each tumulus contains burial chambers carved out of the soft volcanic rock known as "tufa".  Most of the tumuli date from c 600- 500 BC.
