Pompeii: Bakery

This photo of a Pompeiian bakery, or pistrinum, clearly shows an oven towards the rear of the structure.

The object in the center of the picture is a catillus - a biconical hollowed stone which served as the top half of a Roman grain mill.  The catillus, carved from rough volcanic stone, rested atop a concial base - the meta.  The catillus was turned by means of wooden handles while grain was poured into the gap between the stones.  The texture of the porous stone ground the grain into flour.
